Buckhingham Palace announced on Monday he is being treated for an undisclosed form of cancer.
“As all those who have been affected by cancer will know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement,” the 75-year-old head of state wrote in a message.
“It is equally encouraging to hear how sharing my own diagnosis has helped promote public understanding and shine a light on the work of all those organizations which support cancer patients and their families across the UK and wider world,” he added.
His admiration for that “tireless care and dedication is all the greater as a result of my own personal experience,” he concluded in the message, signed “Charles R.”
His eldest son William, Prince of Wales, heir to the British crown, has assumed some of the official duties of his father, who remains at the country residence of Sandringham, in the east of England, while undergoing treatment for the cancer, of which no details have been provided.
The cancer was discovered while the king was undergoing treatment for an enlarged prostate.
The monarch, however, continues to tend to his specific State functions, such as signing laws and weekly telephone contact with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. EFE
