New Delhi, Feb 28 (EFE).- India on Wednesday announced the seizure of some 3,300 kilograms (7,275 pounds) of hashish, methamphetamines, and morphine, the buggest drug bust in the Asian country in recent years.
“In a coordinated operation at sea, the Indian Navy and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) apprehended a suspicious vessel carrying almost 3300 Kgs contraband (3089 Kgs Charas, 158 Kgs Methamphetamine 25 Kgs Morphine),” the defense ministry said in a statement.
It is “the largest seizure of narcotics, in quantity, in recent times,” the statement added.
The operation took place on Tuesday when a Navy warship deployed on missions on the high seas intercepted a vessel with five crew members heading towards India.
The ship was later towed to the nearest Indian port in the western state of Gujarat, where the five detainees and the seized material were handed over to the authorities, the statement said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated the agencies involved in the operations.
“The historic success is a testament to our govt’s unwavering commitment to making our nation drug-free. On this occasion, I congratulate the NCB, the Navy, and the Gujarat Police,” he said in a post on X on Wednesday. EFE
