10 dead, several missing in stone quarry collapse in India

New Delhi, May 28 (EFE).- At least ten people died on Tuesday after a stone quarry collapsed due to heavy rains in northeastern India, officials said.

Authorities have launched an operation to find those trapped under the rubble.

The collapse, which occurred early Tuesday on the outskirts of the city of Aizwal in northeastern Mizoram state, was caused by incessant rains, a fallout of cyclone Remal, which made landfall in the region bordering India and Bangladesh on Sunday.

Videos shared on social media showed huge muddy slopes and wrecked buildings.

While police confirmed the number of deaths to local media, the count of those missing is yet to be estimated.

The local government on Tuesday ordered the closure of all public offices in the state and advised work from home for private companies.

The India Meteorological Department warned of heavy rainfall and winds of up to 60 kilometers (37 miles) per hour in Mizoram and other northeastern states due to Remal, which weakened into a depression on Tuesday.

The cyclone caused severe damage on Sunday, killing at least 10 people in Bangladesh and three in India.

Around 3.7 million people were affected by the cyclone in Bangladesh, where 35,483 houses were destroyed, and 114,992 houses suffered partial damage.

In India, the cyclone uprooted several trees, flooded roads, and caused the walls of some houses to collapse. EFE
