Nearly 50 dead, hundreds injured in Gaza as Israeli strikes intensify

Jerusalem, Oct 12 (EFE).- At least 49 Palestinians, including 22 in the Jabalia refugee camp, were killed over the past day as Israeli forces escalated their attacks in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

The situation continues to deteriorate with shortages of food, medicine, and water amidst mounting casualties.

Since the war in Gaza began on Oct. 7 last year, 42,175 people have been killed, and 98,336 wounded, according to the Hamas-controlled ministry, which also estimates that 10,000 bodies remain trapped under rubble.

Earlier this week, Israel resumed its military offensive in the northern Gaza Strip, ordering further evacuations of civilians near Gaza City, believed to be the next target.

The strikes have been concentrated on the Jabalia refugee camp, one of the hardest-hit areas since the conflict began.

Last night’s airstrike near the Omari mosque in Jabalia killed 22 and injured 90. Humanitarian conditions in the camp continue to worsen, with severe shortages of food, medicine, and water.

“The massacres by the Zionist occupation, aimed at punishing our people in Jabalia for their resistance, are escalating,” said Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that has governed Gaza since 2007.

The secular Fatah party, which controls the Palestinian National Authority governing parts of the occupied West Bank, condemned the ongoing evacuations in northern Gaza, calling it a “war of extermination” and urging immediate international intervention.

While the Gaza Health Ministry’s death toll reflects hospital reports up to midnight, the official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported further casualties on Saturday morning.

Two Palestinians were killed in a drone strike in Gaza City, and another died in a similar attack in Bureij, in central Gaza.

Wafa also reported heavy bombardment in the Jabalia camp early on Saturday, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries, including children. The nearby towns of al0Saftawi and al-Tawam were also targeted, though the casualties have yet to be fully assessed.

As Israeli forces advance in northern Gaza, local hospitals are on the verge of collapse, particularly Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia, which remains under siege by Israeli troops.

The United Nations humanitarian office (OCHA) has been unable to deliver basic supplies and fuel to the facility for the third consecutive day. EFE
