Israel strikes Christian-majority area in northern Lebanon, killing at least 21 people

Beirut, Oct 14 (EFE).- In a rare attack on Christian-majority areas of northern Lebanon, Israel bombed a town near the city of Tripoli on Monday, killing at least 21 people and wounding eight others, the Lebanese Health Ministry said in a statement.

The Lebanese Red Cross said in a statement posted on the X social network that seven ambulance teams were en route to the town of Aitou following the bombing, and that rescue and debris removal operations were underway.

Lebanon’s state-run ANN news agency said this was the first Israeli bombing of the town of Aitou, in the Zgharta district, adding that the attack targeted a residential apartment, while local media reported that the property had recently been rented.

In early October, an Israeli bombing raid first targeted the outskirts of Tripoli, specifically the Beddawi Palestinian refugee camp, where a Hamas official was killed along with several members of his family, according to the Palestinian militant group.

Israel has focused its attacks mainly on Shiite-majority areas in southern and eastern Lebanon but has recently begun targeting other communities in the Mediterranean country, where 18 different religious groups coexist.

Israel’s massive bombing campaign, which began in late September, has already claimed more than 2,200 lives and forced more than 1.2 million people to flee their homes to escape the violence, according to the Lebanese government. EFE
