Valencia at standstill as flash floods spark crisis in Spain

Madrid, Oct 30 (EFE).- The province of Valencia, in eastern Spain, was at a standstill on Wednesday as a result of intense storms that caused deadly flash floods and strong winds in the region.

The provincial government confirmed the death of at least 51 people from the severe flooding and intense storms on Tuesday, while more than 200 have been rescued and many more remain trapped.

More than 60 roads have been cut off or affected across the province, and train and bus services have been suspended.

The armed forces have mobilized helicopters for relief and rescue operations, while teams of psychologists have also been sent for support to those rescued.

The airport at Valencia resumed operations on Wednesday after remaining closed for several hours, during which multiple flights were canceled or diverted. Port operations were also suspended.

Farmers fear thousands of euros in losses of agricultural crops.

Some 155,000 people remain without electricity as a result of the heavy rains and winds from the storm, according to power distribution firm Iberdrola.

The company added that some 500 people had been mobilized across the province and nearby affected areas for repair and restoration of the power grids.

The telecommunications companies Telefonica, Vodafone España and MasOrange have registered various incidents in Valencia and the south of Spain as a result of the Dana and were working to restore the service completely.

Different regions of Spain and neighboring countries such as Portugal have begun to mobilize and offer aid to the devastated regions. EFE
