Kyiv, Nov 28 (EFE).- Ukraine’s Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko said Thursday that Russia is launching a new attack against the country’s energy system, and announced that national electricity company Ukrenergo arranged emergency power cuts to reduce damage to its infrastructure.
According to Ukraine’s air force, several groups of Russian missiles were heading during the early hours of the morning against different regions in the north, center and south of Ukraine.
Ukrainian media claims Russia has also used drones in the attack.
Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov reported on social media that the city had been attacked with several missiles early Thursday.
Explosions also occurred in the Volyn region of northwestern Ukraine, regional authorities reported.
Ukrainian anti-aircraft alerts have also been activated in the capital, Kyiv, and the Russian army has hit infrastructure located in the northeastern region of Sumi.
Since March, Russia has launched massive combined attacks on the Ukrainian electrical system on a dozen occasions. As a result of these attacks, numerous Ukrainian power plants have been damaged and the country has lost much of its generation and distribution capacity.
The last of these attacks took place on Nov. 17 and forced Ukraine to reintroduce scheduled power cuts to save energy in the face of the generation deficit caused by the destruction of equipment in the attacked infrastructure.
Kyiv has repeatedly warned of Russian intentions to leave Ukrainians without electricity during the coldest period of the year to demoralize the population and undermine the country’s economy. EFE
