TikTok to stop operations in US from Jan 19

Washington DC, Jan 17 (EFE).- TikTok announced on Friday that it continues with the idea of suspending its operations in the United States from Jan. 19 despite the decision taken by incumbent President Joe Biden to leave the future of the social network in the hands of his successor, Donald Trump.

“The statements issued today by both the Biden White House and the Department of Justice have failed to provide the necessary clarity and assurance to the service providers that are integral to maintaining TikTok’s availability to over 170 million Americans,” TikTok said.

“Unless the Biden Administration immediately provides a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers assuring non-enforcement, unfortunately TikTok will be forced to go dark on January 19,” it added.

The US Supreme Court on Friday rejected the appeal by TikTok to halt a law that will ban its operations in the country before Jan. 19 January for not having disengaged from its parent company, the Chinese ByteDance.

In principle, it would be up to Biden to take measures on Sunday to ensure that the social network stops operating in the country for reasons of national security, but the White House has decided to leave that responsibility in the hands of Trump, who will take office a day later on Jan. 20.

Trump, who is exploring options to ensure the continuity of the platform, said afterward that he would make his decision in the not-too-distant future.

A bipartisan law passed by Congress in April 2024 gave ByteDance nine months to sell TikTok’s operations in the US to an investor who was not considered an “adversary” of the country or face ban for national security reasons. EFE
