Freed Palestinian prisoners arrive in Ramallah to jubilant welcome

Ramallah, West Bank, Feb 8 (EFE).— Dozens of Palestinian prisoners released by Israel on Saturday arrived in Ramallah, greeted by cheering crowds and emotional reunions with their families as part of the latest hostage-prisoner exchange under the truce.

Wearing Palestinian scarves, some of the freed detainees were hoisted onto shoulders amid an outpouring of joy from the crowd.

They are among the 183 prisoners Israel is releasing as part of the latest hostage-prisoner exchange with Hamas under the first phase of the truce.

According to the Committee of Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners of the West Bank, 111 of those released are from Gaza, detained following the October 7, 2023, attacks.

The prisoners left Israel’s Ofer prison under military escort, traveling to the Mahmoud Darwish Museum in Ramallah, where a heavier security presence was in place compared to previous releases.

Hundreds of Palestinians, Red Cross workers, and relatives awaited their arrival.

Seven of the released prisoners will be deported to Egypt, the Committee of Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners told EFE.

Their release follows Hamas’s handover of three Israeli hostages in Gaza, who appeared frail and visibly thin during the transfer. EFE
