Trump warns trade war ‘won’t be easy,’ urges Americans to ‘hang tough’

Washington, Apr 5 (EFE).— President Donald Trump acknowledged on Saturday that the trade war he launched earlier this week “won’t be easy,” urging Americans to “hang tough” for an economic revolution.

“Already, more than five trillion dollars of investment, and rising fast! This is an economic revolution, and we will win. Hang tough, it won’t be easy, but the end result will be historic. We will make America great again,” Trump wrote in a message on Truth Social, his social media platform.

The Republican leader claimed that his trade policy would allow the United States to bring “back jobs and businesses like never before.”

Trump specifically pointed to China, which retaliated with a 34 percent tariff on US goods, asserting that “China has been hit much harder” than the United States.

“They, and many other nations, have treated us unsustainably badly. We have been the dumb and helpless ‘whipping post,’ but not any longer.”

The post came as Trump spent the day in Florida, playing golf for the third straight day since he announced sweeping global tariffs on Wednesday.

The move sparked a sharp downturn in financial markets, with stock drops not seen since the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

Under the new policy, Trump imposed a universal 10 percent tariff on imports from both allies and rivals, with even higher levies targeting countries like China and members of the European Union.

Trump has argued that foreign nations have long taken advantage of US exports and that the tariffs will bolster domestic industry.

However, economists and business leaders warn that the move could trigger rising consumer prices and potentially push the country toward recession. EFE
