Israel shells southern Beirut suburbs minutes after evacuation order

Beirut (EFE).- Israel carried out at least four bombings on Sunday near a building in the southern suburbs of Beirut, known as Dahieh, half an hour after the Israel Defense Forces issued an evacuation order for residents of the area.

According to the Lebanese National News Agency (ANN), Israel first carried out three “warning” bombing raids, targeting the Al Yamous neighborhood in the Al Hadath district.

Shortly afterward, Israeli warplanes launched a “violent attack” with three shells in the same area, resulting in the destruction of a warehouse and “damage to several buildings and cars,” ANN said, without giving further details.

No deaths have yet been reported in this wave of shelling in the area, where, according to state media, some neighbors fired upwards “to warn people to evacuate the area threatened by the Israeli enemy.”

According to EFE, several columns of smoke rose from the area under attack and could be seen from several points in the Lebanese capital.

The bombings came minutes after the Israeli army ordered the evacuation of a building in Dahieh, one of the areas hardest hit by Israeli air strikes during the 2024 war against the Lebanese group Hezbollah.

Israeli planes heavily bombed Dahieh in September, October, and November 2024 as part of an escalation against Hezbollah that eliminated its leadership, including its decades-long leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Since then, and even though Israeli attacks have become less frequent following the signing of a ceasefire with Lebanon in November 2024, Israel has occasionally returned to attacking the area, arguing that the Shia group is trying to re-establish its presence.

Israeli forces attacked the southern suburbs of Beirut in early April, killing at least four people. EFE
