Jerusalem, May 26 (EFE).- At least 31 Palestinians were killed early Monday in the Israeli bombing of a school where displaced people were sheltering in northern Gaza City, an official from the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health confirmed to EFE.
“The total number of casualties at the Fahmi Al Fa school so far is 31. The bodies of 30 people are in the morgue of Al Shifa Hospital, and one in Ahli Hospital,” said Zaher Al Waheidi, head of the ministry’s information department.
Videos of the event, allegedly recorded by Civil Defense rescuers, show a large fire, bodies of children in the rubble and people trying to escape the fire.
The Israeli army claimed the school functioned as a command and control center for Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants, from where they collected information for their attacks.
Schools in Gaza have largely become shelters for those displaced by the Israeli military offensive, who make up about 90 per cent of the population of some 2.1 million people.
In addition, another 15 people, including members of the same family and displaced persons, were killed in the airstrike on a house in the northern town of Jabalia, the same health official confirmed.
“The house had two floors and was completely destroyed,” local sources told EFE, while the Civil Defense continues to search for survivors. EFE
