Washington, Jun 19 (EFE). – United States President Donald Trump will decide on whether or not to go to war with Iran in the next two weeks, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced Thursday at a press conference.
“Based on the fact that there’s a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks,” Citing a message from Trump, Leavitt told reporters.
Leavitt emphasized that Trump’s primary concern was preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, but he was also open to diplomatic solutions.
“The president is always interested in a diplomatic solution …he is a peacemaker in chief. He is the peace through strength president. And so if there’s a chance for diplomacy, the president’s always going to grab it, but he’s not afraid to use strength as well I will add,” Leavitt said.
Leavitt confirmed ongoing communication between the US and Iran for negotiations but did not specify if it was direct.
Trump has been noncommittal about a potential strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities.
“I may do it, I may not do it. I mean, nobody knows what I’m going to do,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday.
This potential conflict has sparked debate within the MAGA movement: some allies, like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, oppose it due to Trump’s campaign stance against entering foreign wars.
However, others, such as Sen. Lindsey Graham, advocate for action against Iran, citing security concerns. EFE
