Several arrested, injured after anti-migrant clashes in Spain

Torre Pacheco, Spain, Jul 14 (EFE).- Several people were injured and several others arrested following three days of anti-migrant unrest in Torre Pacheco, a town in the southeastern Spanish region of Murcia, according to the authorities.

The unrest began after a 68-year-old resident was brutally attacked on Jul. 9, allegedly by an immigrant who fled the scene but has since been identified by investigators.

The incident led to three days of rioting in the streets of the Murcian town, which has a population of around 40,000 and a large Maghrebi immigrant community.

Six people have been arrested in connection with the riots, which were organized by far-right groups who have called for persecution of migrants.

In recent hours, two immigrants were arrested for reportedly collaborating in the cover-up of the alleged perpetrator of the attack, having facilitated his escape and the destruction of evidence.

According to the authorities, the investigation was underway and further arrests could be made.

The Minister for Youth and Children, Sira Rego, condemned the “racist persecution” of immigrants. claiming it was fueled by the right and far-right in the country.

The far-right Vox party has criticized the government for favoring “illegal” immigration, claiming that it leads to increased insecurity.

The leader of the conservative People’s Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has called on the government to reinforce security forces to stop the spiral of violence. EFE
