10 dead, 9 missing in South Korean floods, landslides

Seoul, July 20 (EFE).- At least 10 people have died and nine were still missing in South Korea on Sunday as a result of the torrential rains that caused flooding and landslides in recent days.

Six of the dead and seven missing have been recorded in southern Sancheong county, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior.

The other deaths occurred in the city of Osan, in Gyeonggi province, and in the towns of Seosan and Dangjin, both in South Chungcheong province.

In addition to the deaths, nine people have been reported missing.

Rescue teams continued their search efforts in Sancheong, so an increase in the number of deaths is not ruled out.

A total of 12,921 people across the country have taken to shelters, and damage has been reported to more than 2,234 private properties, including buildings and farmland, in addition to 1,920 cases of flooded roads, soil loss and damaged public facilities, according to the local news agency Yonhap.

The torrential rains that have hit South Korea since Wednesday left accumulated rainfall of 793.5 millimeters in Sancheong alone as of 5 am local time on Sunday.

In the neighboring county of Hapcheon, 699 mm were recorded, and in Hadong, 621.5 mm.

South Korean meteorological authorities have urged the public to continue to exercise extreme caution, as more heavy rains are forecast for capital Seoul and Gangwon province throughout the day. EFE
