Miami, US (EFE).- At least two people were killed and three others injured, in addition to the alleged attacker, who was arrested, in a police-involved shooting that took place in the casino area of the Grand Sierra Resort in Nevada on Monday, according to local authorities in the city of Reno, near the California border.
Mayor Hillary Schieve and Councillor Devon Reese disclosed the number of victims to the Reno Gazette-Journal, while Northern Nevada District Health Officer Chad Kingsley shared the information with CNN. The identities of the victims have not yet been revealed.
In a statement on her social media accounts, the mayor said that the investigation is in a very early stage and details are scarce.
“My heart goes out to everyone impacted by this morning’s tragic shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort The City of Reno stands with the GSR staff, guests, and all those affected,” Schieve posted on X.
Reno Police Department Chief Kathryn Nance reported that the shooting began at 7:25 am local time in the hotel complex’s parking area. She reported the arrest of the suspect, whom she identified only as an adult male, but warned that details are still lacking.
She said at a press conference that new officers responded and arrived on the scene within minutes and located the shooter.
Local media had reported that the shooting began in a parking lot outside the hotel on Monday morning and then spread to other parts of the property.
“My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong—but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation,” posted Reno councilman Devon Reese on social media.
The Reno Police Department had issued a warning of a “critical incident” and advised the public to avoid the area.
“Suspect is in custody with no outstanding threat to the community,” the institution said in its latest report on X.
Guests at the hotel shared images of the alleged shooter on social media as the police arrested him in the car park, and reported seeing people who had been shot.
The authorities have not yet provided any additional information about the incident, including the motive for the crime or the identity of the alleged perpetrator.
According to the civilian organization Gun Violence Archive, the United States has registered at least 249 mass shootings, in which at least four people are shot, not counting the attacker, so far in 2025. EFE
