New Delhi, Jan 18 (EFE).– British band Coldplay has return to India after an eight-year hiatus, launching a series of highly anticipated performances starting Saturday, with the grand finale set to be the largest concerts in the band’s history.
The band will perform five shows across Mumbai and Ahmedabad between January 18 and 26.
The opening concert takes place at the DY Patil Cricket Stadium in Navy Mumbai, with a capacity of over 45,000 spectators.
The group’s lead singer, Chris Martin, and his bandmates have ignited a wave of enthusiasm across India, with hotel prices in concert cities skyrocketing, reportedly exceeding $1,000 per night, according to The Hindustan Times.
Fan fervor was evident in September last year when tickets for the January 18, 19, and 21 shows in Mumbai, along with the January 25 and 26 performances in Ahmedabad, sold out in under 24 hours.
Many tickets reappeared on resale platforms at inflated prices, prompting India’s anti-corruption agency to investigate black market sales.
Tickets priced at 2,500 rupees (around $30) on the official platform BookMyShow were listed for $129 to $350 on resale sites like Viagogo. Authorities conducted raids to curb illegal sales.
After the Mumbai performances, Coldplay will head to Ahmedabad, where the final shows will take place in a modern stadium with 132,000 seats, named after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The band announced on X that these performances will be their most significant ever.
Coldplay’s ongoing world tour, their eighth, began in Costa Rica in May 2022 and is set to conclude in London this September.
The tour features music from their ninth and tenth studio albums, Music of Spheres (2021) and Moon Music (2024). EFE
