Russia rules out Trump-Putin summit in Saudi Arabia

Moscow, Apr 2 (EFE).- The Kremlin on Wednesday ruled out a possible summit between Moscow and Washington during US President Donald Trump’s May visit to Saudi Arabia, which has hosted several rounds of negotiations in recent months to normalize relations between the two countries.

Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said during his daily telephone press briefing that these were Trump’s plans and had “nothing to do with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin.”

According to Peskov, the Russian leader has no such plans at the moment and insisted that there was still no agreement on the date and venue of the Putin-Trump summit, while admitting that Moscow was in contact with Washington “through various channels.”

On Tuesday, the White House announced that Trump would travel to Saudi Arabia in May on the first overseas visit of his second term.

The tour will include stops in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Russia criticized the US peace plan for Ukraine for the first time earlier this week, saying it focused on achieving a ceasefire without addressing the root causes of the conflict.

The energy truce declared by both sides on Mar. 25 is unraveling as Moscow and Kyiv are trading accusations of violations. EFE
