Brussels, Jun 10 (EFE).- Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has resigned after his party, the Flemish Liberals and Democrats (Open Vld), suffered a significant defeat in federal, regional, and European Parliament elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For us, it was a particularly difficult evening; we lost,” De Croo said in a speech to his supporters on Sunday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belgian King Philippe on Monday accepted De Croo\u2019s resignation, and has begun consultations with the leaders of various parties to appoint a candidate to form a government.<\/p>\n\n\n

Bart De Wever, the leader of the Flemish nationalist party N-VA, the winner of the elections, will be the first to try to form a government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De Croo congratulated the N-VA, the far-right Vlaams Belang, and the socialist party Vooruit for their election victories, and admitted that he had not expected such a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I will not shirk my responsibilities. Starting tomorrow, I will resign as Prime Minister. I will fully concentrate on current affairs and prepare everything for a smooth transition to my successor or successors,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De Croo acknowledged that his party currently has “more questions than answers” about its election performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, despite the disappointing results, he remained optimistic about the future of Open VLD, describing his party as “resilient” and expressing confidence that the party will come back “stronger.” EFE<\/p>\n\n\n\n
