Jerusalem, Aug 3 (EFE).- The Israeli army confirmed Saturday that it had killed a member of Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah, Nazih Abed Ali, in the area of Bazuriya, in southern Lebanon.<\/p>
Abed Ali was “a significant terrorist on the Hezbollah Southern Front\u201d who was involved in “planning and carrying out various terror activities,” the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement.<\/p>
The Lebanese group also confirmed Abed Ali’s death, without elaborating on the circumstances.<\/p>
Israel said his death “represents a significant blow” to the capabilities of Hezbollah’s southern front.<\/p>
Ali\u2019s killing comes amid heightened tension in the region after the Shiite group vowed revenge for the assassination by Israel of its top military commander, Fuad Shukr, on Wednesday.<\/p>
The Israel-Lebanon border is experiencing its worst spike of violence since 2006, with an intense exchange of fire since October, which has claimed the lives of more than 580 people.<\/p>
Most of the deaths have come on the Lebanese side and in the ranks of Hezbollah, which has confirmed 355 deaths, in addition to some 110 civilians.<\/p>
In Israel, 47 people have been killed in the north: 22 military and 25 civilians, including 12 Druze children in an attack on Majdal Shams in the occupied Golan Heights a week ago.<\/p>
Hostilities along the divide began on Oct. 8, the day after conflict broke out in the Gaza Strip. EFE<\/p>
