Beirut, Oct 23 (EFE).- The Israeli army (IDF) began attacking the southern Lebanese city of Tyre on Wednesday, hours after issuing an evacuation warning for the city, official sources said.<\/p>
Lebanon\u2019s state-owned National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli aggression targeted Sawt al-Farah Street in Tyre.<\/p>
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tyre is the most important city in southern Lebanon, a region where Israeli attacks have been concentrated since the start of the campaign that began just a month ago against the Mediterranean country.<\/p>
Lebanese Civil Defense teams were working to move elderly and citizens in difficult situations to safe places, according to the NNA.<\/p>
This is the first large-scale Israeli operation against the city of Tyre.<\/p>
An eyewitness in the city told EFE over telephone that the people were unable to go out as the situation was “too dangerous.”<\/p>
Hours earlier, the Israeli Army issued evacuation orders for the residents of Tyre, where thousands of displaced people from the southern border have been taking refuge.<\/p>
\u201cHezbollah\u2019s activity forces the IDF to act in the area you are in. The IDF does not want to harm you,\u201d IDF\u2019s Arabic-language spokesperson Avichay Adraee posted on social media platform X, along with a map of the areas that were to be targeted.<\/p>
\u201cYou must immediately move away from the area marked in red and head north to the Awali River,\u201d he added.<\/p>
According to UN data, more than a quarter of Lebanon has been subject to evacuation warnings from Israel, especially since the escalation of the conflict between them a month ago.<\/p>
More than 2,500 people have been killed in Lebanon, most of them in the last one month, and over 11,000 have been wounded since the current hostilities started with Israel in October last year. EFE <\/p>
