Mexico City, Jan 29 (EFE).- Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday that her government is investigating the recent discovery of 72 bodies buried in clandestine graves in the northern state of Chihuahua, near the United States border.<\/p>
In response to a question during her morning press conference about whether the federal government had any information regarding the discovery last week of bodies and skeletal remains in the community of El Willi, municipality of Casas Grandes.<\/p>
Sheinbaum stated that the federal government was collaborating with the government of Chihuahua and its Attorney General’s Office.<\/p>
On Saturday, the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Chihuahua reported the discovery of 56 bodies, and on Monday they revised the figure to 72 bodies and skeletal remains.<\/p>
The president said that at this point it is still not clear whose human remains were found, while some local media have questioned whether they were undocumented migrants.<\/p>
“It’s difficult to have that information in one day. An investigation is being carried out, first of all forensically, and then on the events,” she said.<\/p>
According to a report by Human Rights Watch, there are nearly 5,700 clandestine graves in Mexico that activists and authorities have discovered and approximately 53,000 human remains were in storage awaiting identification by the end of 2022.<\/p>
The National Registry of Missing and Unaccounted for Persons has recorded more than 120,000 missing people in Mexico. EFE <\/p>
