Damascus, Jan 29 (EFE). – The leader of the Syrian revolution that toppled the regime of Bashar al-Assad in December and head of the de facto government, Ahmed al-Sharaa, was named on Wednesday as the country’s president during the transitional period, according to Syrian television channel SyriaTV.<\/p>
Sharaa was appointed “as the country’s president in the transitional phase,” the state-run channel said, quoting military official Hassan Abdel Ghani after a meeting of the various military factions.<\/p>
The colonel added that the appointment “authorizes the president of the republic to form an interim legislative council (…) until a permanent constitution for the country is decided.”<\/p>
Abdelgani also announced the cancellation of the 2012 constitution, the suspension of all special laws, and the dissolution of the assembly formed during the ousted regime. EFE<\/p>
