EFE\/EPA\/JIM LO SCALZO<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;A PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided in midair with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport around 9 pm local time,&#8221; the FAA said. &#8220;PSA was operating Flight 5342 as American Airlines. It departed from Wichita, Kansas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">American Airlines said in statement that \u201cthere were 60 passengers and four crew members on board the aircraft.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was confirmed later in a press conference by Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, who added that three people had been on board the army&#8217;s Black Hawk helicopter at the time of the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The helicopter had been operating out of Davison Army Airfield, Fort Belvoir, and was on a training flight, the military said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bowser would not comment on whether any passenger had been found so far, nor on any casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some 300 emergency units with fire trucks, police cars and ambulances, as well as rescue boats and diving units had been deployed, Bowser said, with emergency services \u201cworking in very dark and cold conditions\u201d to try to locate the passengers in the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Washington\u2019s Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly said at the same press conference that divers were \u201csearching both aircraft\u201d in the water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a highly complex operation. The conditions are extremely rough for the responders. It\u2019s cold, they\u2019re dealing with relatively windy conditions,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe water is dark, it is murky \u2013 that is a very tough condition to be diving in,&#8221; Donnelly said, adding that recovery efforts would take days.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Family members of the passengers were being spoken to by authorities at the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCertainly I speak for the people of Washington, 700,000 of us, who are extremely sorry for the families who are experiencing loss tonight,\u201d Bowser said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/efe.com\/\/srv\/htdocs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/rss-efef0fc6b8f2bd436837086ab9831756fec0b99eec1w.jpg?fit=1920%2C1281&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Rescue teams stage to help search the Potomac River after a commercial airplane reportedly collided with a military helicopter on approach to Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC, USA, 29 January 2025. NOT GOOD!!!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier, he had been more measured in an official statement, saying that he had been briefed on the \u201cterrible accident\u201d and that he was monitoring the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMay God bless their souls,\u201d he said, thanking first responders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the Pentagon and the army are investigating the crash. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAbsolutely tragic. Search and rescue efforts still ongoing. Prayers for all impacted souls, and their families,\u201d he wrote on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The airport will remain closed until 11 am on Thursday.
