Buenos Aires, March 11 (EFE).- The trial over the death of football legend Diego Maradona began Tuesday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with the prosecution and plaintiffs arguing that he was \u201cabandoned\u201d and was the victim of a \u201cmurderplan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, defense attorneys divided their strategies, with some shifting blame onto the main defendants. The trial, expected to last up to five months, will feature at least 92 witnesses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proceedings started around 10:45 am at Criminal Court No. 3 in San Isidro, located at the north of Buenos Aires province. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seven healthcare professionals, accused of simple homicide with eventual intent, came face to face with Maradona\u2019s three daughters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the hearing, Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari presented a never-before-seen photograph of Maradona bedridden, intubated, and visibly swollen. \u201cThis is how Maradona died,\u201d Ferrari told the court. <\/p>\n\n\n

The image was reportedly taken on November 2020, the day of the football star\u2019s death, though Ferrari did not clarify whether it was the last photo taken before he passed or one taken post-mortem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ferri argued that the defendants left Maradona in a state of \u201cneglect\u201d and \u201cat the mercy of fate\u201d by placing him under private medical care at home instead of in a hospital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey voluntarily assumed responsibility for his home treatment while failing to meet their professional duties,\u201d he stated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defendants on trial<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The two central figures in the case are neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, one of Maradona\u2019s doctors who pushed for home care, and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, accused of mismanaging Maradona\u2019s medication, ignoring its side effects, and falsifying a medical visit certificate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plaintiffs\u2019 attorney Fernando Burlando, representing Maradona\u2019s daughters, Dalma and Giannina Maradona, accused the medical team of orchestrating an \u201cinhumane and effective plan\u201d that led to the footballer\u2019s death. <\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cMaradona was murdered\u201d, Burlando declared, insisting that even in a poorly equipped hospital, \u201chis life would have been saved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Divided defense strategies <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Among the accused is nurse Dahiana Madrid, who has requested a jury trial and will be judged in a separate process in the second half of the year, once the main trial concludes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defense teams have taken different approaches. While the lawyers for Luque and Cosachov are arguing for acquittal, others are distancing their clients from responsibility by blaming the two lead defendants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attorney Rodolfo Baqu\u00e9, representing nurse Ricardo Almir\u00f3n, argued that if there is criminal liability in Maradona\u2019s death, it should fall solely on Luque a Cosachov, not on those handling administrative tasks, corporate paperwork, or nursing duties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
