Washington, Apr 7 (EFE). – United States President Donald Trump threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on China on Monday if Beijing does not withdraw the levies it imposed on US products in response to Trump’s tariff announcement. <\/p>
“If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long-term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th,” Trump stated on his social media platform Truth Social.<\/p>
“All talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated! Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately,” he added.<\/p>
China imposed 34% tariffs on the United States after Trump unleashed a widespread trade war on Apr. 2, announcing 10% minimum tariffs on most countries and, in some cases higher ones, such as China’s 34%.<\/p>
Considering previous levies, Trump has imposed around 54% tariffs on China. If the new threatened levies go into effect, the Asian country could face a 104% tariff.<\/p>
On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian warned that “pressure and threats are not the way to deal with China.”<\/p>
Trump has shown himself open to negotiating with any country to reduce the US trade deficit; however, international analysts have increasingly warned in recent days that the US president’s policy could end up causing a global recession. EFE <\/p>
