San Antonio, US (EFE).- United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement director Todd Lyons said Wednesday that he wants to streamline the deportation process in the same way Amazon efficiently delivers packages across the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe need to get better at treating this like a business,\u201d Lyons said at the Border Security Expo in Phoenix, Arizona. The acting ICE director explained that he wants to see a deportation process \u201clike \u2018Amazon\u2019 Prime, but with human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lyons emphasized the need to fast-track the removal of migrants from the country, according to local media outlet Arizona Mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His remarks come amid legal scrutiny of the President Donald Trump administration\u2019s immigration policies, which include a pledge to carry out the largest deportation campaign in US history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Courts are currently reviewing cases involving the detention of migrants who have no criminal records or who hold some form of legal status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the administration\u2019s most controversial moves is the transfer of more than 200 people\u2014mostly Venezuelan migrants with no criminal background\u2014to a mega-prison in El Salvador, CBS News reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Trump administration has invoked an 18th-century law, the Alien Enemies Act, to justify the mass deportations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The controversial use of the law, enacted in 1798 and last used during World War II to intern Japanese Americans, has drawn swift legal challenges from several human rights organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court lifted a federal order that had blocked deportations of Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ruling allows the administration to continue using the law for now, specifically to deport individuals alleged to have gang affiliations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, it also requires that detainees be informed of their deportation status and given a fair opportunity to challenge it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also speaking at the conference, Trump\u2019s so-called \u201cborder czar,\u201d Tom Homan, defended the increasing use of the Alien Enemies Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat is a law enacted by Congress, and we are using that,\u201d Homan said, adding that it \u201cbothers him\u201d when judges or politicians attempt to prevent its application. EFE<\/p>\n\n\n\n
