{"id":1807065,"date":"2025-04-12T13:56:23","date_gmt":"2025-04-12T11:56:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/?p=1807065"},"modified":"2025-04-12T17:12:53","modified_gmt":"2025-04-12T15:12:53","slug":"iran-nuclear-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/en\/latest-news\/2025-04-12\/iran-nuclear-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran, US begin nuclear talks in Oman amid deep divides"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tehran, Apr 12 (EFE).- Iran and the United States began indirect negotiations Saturday in Oman over Tehran\u2019s nuclear program, amid mounting tensions and threats of military action from US President Donald Trump.<br><br>The talks are taking place under the shadow of sharp disagreements over the scope of the dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ismail Baghaei, confirmed the start of the discussions on X, saying Omani diplomats are serving as intermediaries between the two rival delegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The negotiating teams met in separate rooms to exchange their views and positions through Oman Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran\u2019s delegation is led by Foreign Minister Ab\u00e1s Araqch\u00ed, while the US is represented by Steve Witkoff, the Special Envoy for the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"626\" src=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-85-1024x626.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1807232\" style=\"width:800px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-85-1024x626.webp 1024w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-85-300x183.webp 300w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-85-768x469.webp 768w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-85-1536x938.webp 1536w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-85-430x263.webp 430w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-85-1200x733.webp 1200w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-85.webp 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Washington says the negotiations will be direct, Tehran maintains they are strictly indirect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking upon his arrival in Muscat, Araqch\u00ed said Saturday that Tehran aimed to reach a &#8220;fair and honorable&#8221; agreement with the United States over its nuclear program, as the two sides prepare for indirect talks in Oman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur intention is to reach a fair and honorable agreement from a position of equality,\u201d Araqch\u00ed told Iranian state television. \u201cIf the other party also comes with the same stance, God willing, there will be an opportunity for an initial understanding that can open the door to further negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Araqch\u00ed arrived in Muscat earlier in the day and met with Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, who will serve as a mediator in the talks between the long-standing rivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the meeting with the Omani minister, Araqch\u00ed conveyed \u201cthe key points and positions\u201d of the Islamic Republic.<br>The United States will be represented by Steve Witkoff, the special envoy for the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Araqch\u00ed emphasized that the discussions will be \u201cindirect\u201d and limited strictly to Iran\u2019s nuclear program, excluding issues such as Tehran\u2019s missile program and its support for regional armed groups like Yemen\u2019s Houthis and Lebanon\u2019s Hezbollah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat is clear is that the negotiations will be indirect and, from our point of view, will only address the nuclear issue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"652\" src=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-82-1024x652.webp\" alt=\"Motorists drive past to an anti-US mural in a street in Tehran, Iran, 12 April 2025.
