{"id":183087,"date":"2022-11-23T17:51:20","date_gmt":"2022-11-23T16:51:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/?p=183087"},"modified":"2024-06-10T12:05:09","modified_gmt":"2024-06-10T10:05:09","slug":"scotland-cannot-hold-independence-vote-without-uk-consent-court-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/en\/latest-news\/2022-11-23\/scotland-cannot-hold-independence-vote-without-uk-consent-court-ruling\/","title":{"rendered":"Scotland cannot hold independence vote without UK consent: court ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">London, Nov 23 (EFE).- The Scottish government cannot hold an independence referendum without the consent of the United Kingdom\u2019s government, the UK\u2019s Supreme Court ruled Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-videopress\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"VideoPress Video Player\" aria-label='VideoPress Video Player' width='1200' height='675' src='https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/7NgGzfjF?cover=1&amp;preloadContent=metadata&amp;useAverageColor=1&amp;hd=1' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen data-resize-to-parent=\"true\" allow='clipboard-write'><\/iframe><script src='https:\/\/v0.wordpress.com\/js\/next\/videopress-iframe.js?m=1658470809'><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The ruling will come as a blow to the independence ambitions of Scotland\u2019s first minister Nicola Sturgeon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cWhile I am obviously very disappointed by it (the ruling), I do respect and accept the judgment of the court, in securing Scotland\u2019s independence, we will always be guided by democracy and the respect for the rule of law,\u201d Sturgeon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Sturgeon added that the court was not asked to deliberate on the democratic mandate to hold a referendum, which she said was \u201cundeniable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The head of Scotland\u2019s government said her Scottish National Party would hold a conference in the new year to plot its path to independence and added the next UK elections, due to be held no later than January 2025, would act as a de facto referendum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cAs is becoming clearer by the day, achieving independence is not now just desirable, it is essential if Scotland is to escape the disaster of Brexit, the damage of policies imposed by governments we do not vote for, and the low growth, high inequality economic model that is holding us back,\u201d she told a press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Her government brought the case to the court ahead of plans to legislate a referendum on October 19 next year, which argued it would have been \u201cadvisory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scotland\u2019s parliament needed authorization from the UK government<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Supreme Court Lord Reed said in his ruling Wednesday that Scotland\u2019s parliament did not have the powers to slate the poll without the green light from the UK government, which has so far refused to entertain granting permission for a second referendum in the UK\u2019s northernmost country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The UK government\u2019s Scotland secretary, Conservative Party member, Alistair Jack, said: \u201cWe note and respect the unanimous ruling from the supreme court today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cPeople in Scotland want both their governments to be concentrating all attention and resources on the issues that matter most to them.
