{"id":1871178,"date":"2025-05-12T12:59:31","date_gmt":"2025-05-12T10:59:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/?p=1871178"},"modified":"2025-05-12T18:12:19","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T16:12:19","slug":"pope-to-press","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/en\/latest-news\/2025-05-12\/pope-to-press\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope Leo to media: Disarm words to help disarm the world"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vatican City, May 12 (EFE).\u2014 Pope Leo XIV on Monday urged journalists to embrace a \u201ccommunication of peace,\u201d calling on them to \u201cdisarm words\u201d to help disarm the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet us disarm words, and we will help disarm the Earth,\u201d the pope said in his first public audience since his election, addressing journalists who covered the conclave that brought him to the papacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must say no to the war of words and images. We must reject the paradigm of war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In keeping with a tradition begun by Pope Francis, the first American pontiff gathered several thousand members of the press in the Paul VI Hall at the Vatican.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe live in difficult times to navigate and recount, times that challenge all of us and from which we must not escape,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"652\" src=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-91-1024x652.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1871908\" style=\"width:800px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-91-1024x652.webp 1024w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-91-300x191.webp 300w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-91-768x489.webp 768w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-91-1536x978.webp 1536w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-91-430x274.webp 430w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-91-1200x764.webp 1200w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-91.webp 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pope also expressed the Church\u2019s solidarity with journalists imprisoned for seeking and reporting the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He called for their release, saying he was thinking especially of those who report on war \u201ceven at the cost of their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe suffering of these imprisoned journalists challenges the conscience of nations and the international community,\u201d he said, urging the world \u201cto safeguard the precious gift of free speech and freedom of the press.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stressed that this era calls on everyone, regardless of their role or function, \u201cnever to give in to mediocrity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat is needed is not a noisy and muscular communication, but one capable of listening, of amplifying the voices of the weak and voiceless,\u201d Leo XIV said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/efe.com\/\/srv\/htdocs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/rss-efe9e686e52c327a71364d7afabb41fe97703d35470w.webp?fit=1920%2C1364&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Pope Leo XIV (R) arrives for an audience with members of the media at the Paul VI Audience Hall in Vatican City, 12 May 2025. EFE-EPA\/ETTORE FERRARI\n\" style=\"width:800px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDisarmed and disarming communication allows us to share a different vision of the world and to act in ways consistent with human dignity,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are on the front lines narrating conflicts and hopes for peace, situations of injustice and poverty, and the silent work of many for a better world,\u201d he said. \u201cThat is why I ask you to choose, with conscience and courage, the path of a communication of peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There could be \u201cno communication or journalism detached from time and history,\u201d he said, quoting Saint Augustine, his spiritual predecessor as an Augustinian, who said, \u201cLet us live well, and the times will be good. We are the times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Met with thunderous applause throughout his address, the pope warned that one of today\u2019s greatest challenges is escaping a modern-day \u201cTower of Babel,\u201d a \u201cconfusion of languages without love, often ideological or biased.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s why the words you choose and the style you adopt matter,\u201d he said. \u201cCommunication is not just about transmitting information. It\u2019s about shaping culture and creating human and digital environments that foster dialogue and engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He concluded by urging caution and ethical responsibility amid rapid technological change and the rise of artificial intelligence, which, he said, \u201cholds immense potential but requires discernment so that these tools serve the common good and benefit all of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Leo XIV entered the Paul VI Hall to a standing ovation and joked that he hoped the applause would still be there at the end of his speech.
