Port-au-Prince, (EFE).- Since June 2024, Kenyan soldiers deployed to Haiti as part of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) have been on the frontlines of a violent and deteriorating crisis in Port-au-Prince.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tasked with patrolling areas under gang control, they operate under intense pressure, facing well-armed criminals and harsh conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re the only ones actually confronting the gangs,\u201d said a Kenyan officer, speaking anonymously. \u201cOther countries handle building security or evacuate the wounded. The dangerous part is left to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

A convoy of armored vehicles makes its way through the dusty streets of P\u00e9tion-Ville, near Toussaint Louverture International Airport, still partially controlled by gangs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soldiers communicate in English, weapons drawn, scanning their surroundings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multiple Kenyan troops have been killed or injured since deployment, including fatal incidents in Artibonite and ambushes in July 2024 and March 2025. \u201cThe criminals have better weapons than we do,\u201d a soldier admitted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Internal tensions and strategic confusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With nearly 90% of the capital controlled by gangs, more than 5,6000 people killed in 2024, and over one million displaced, Haiti\u2019s humanitarian crisis is escalating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The overwhelmed national police force relies heavily on the MSS, yet Kenyan officers report deep frustrations within the mission. <\/p>\n\n\n

According to police general Douglas Kanja, deployed officers received pay only through Oct. 2024, months after the mission<\/a> began, confirming what international outlets have also reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soldiers complain of faulty armored vehicles, lack of air support, and poor logistical planning. \u201cSome call themselves \u2018specialists\u2019 in avoiding patrols,\u201d said a soldier. \u201cIt all depends on who you know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Failures in command and coordination<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sources point to operational failures and questionable decisions from leadership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur commander sent us to Pont-Sond\u00e9 while there are still gang-held neighborhoods near the airport,\u201d said a soldier. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others say failed operations stem from insufficient backup and flawed strategies. \u201cThe mission lacks direction,\u201d one officer explained. \u201cWe are asked to do too much with too little.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Despite support from countries like Guatemala, El Salvador, Belize, Jamaica, and the Bahamas, the multinational force has so far failed to curb organized crime in Haiti. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenyan soldiers, over 1,000 of whom are deployed, feel isolated and overburdened. \u201cWe are alone out there,\u201d said a soldier. \u201cAnd we\u2019re paying the price for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Haiti\u2019s crisis deepens, with armed groups continuing to expand their grip on the capital, and the international mission struggling to deliver results. EFE <\/p>\n\n\n\n
