Port-au-Prince, (EFE).- As Haiti sinks deeper into political instability, widespread violence, and a collapsing healthcare system, many citizens are seeking refuge in Voodoo, a religion deeply rooted in the country\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPoliticians have failed us. So have the traditional religious leaders. Now, the loas are our last defense,\u201d says Augustin St-Clou, known as Le Roi Vudu (The Voodoo King).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With over a million people displaced and more than 5,600 killed, according to the United Nations and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), priests and priestesses, houngans and mambos, have seen a surge in people asking for spiritual protection, healing rituals, and answers about missing relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n

Voodoo ceremonies, often held in small temples called hounf\u00f2s, involve chants in Haitian Creole, sacred symbols (v\u00e8v\u00e8s), and offerings to spirits such as Ogou, Ezili Dant\u00f2, and Damballah. \u201cEzili spoke to us through my mother,\u201d says one participant. \u201cWe found my brother alive three days later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The religion, which blends West African spirituality, Catholicism, and indigenous elements, has long endured persecution. \u201cThey may burn our temples, but they can\u2019t extinguish our faith,\u201d says St-Clou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voodoo: A history of resistance and power<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Voodoo has played both healing and political roles in Haiti. The 1791 Bois Ca\u00efman ceremony helped spark the revolution against slavery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, the Duvalier regimes used Vodou to assert control and spread fear, employing houngans as informants and weaponizing spirits like Baron Samedi.<\/p>\n\n\n

Still, practitioners emphasize that the religion itself was not to blame. \u201cMan corrupted it, not Voodoo,\u201d says St-Clou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In modern times, Voodoo leaders were involved in political solutions like the 2021 Montana Accord. Although it was never implemented, it highlighted Vodou\u2019s continued presence as a force in national dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haiti’s traditional medicine in collapsed health system<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With hospitals overwhelmed or closed, many turn to Voodoo not just for spiritual guidance but also for healthcare. \u201cI couldn\u2019t afford a doctor, but my houngan cured me with herbs and rituals,\u201d says Macson, a merchant suffering from untreated prostate cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the absence of formal medical care, houngans and mambos provide herbal infusions, spiritual cleansings, and support for mental health challenges. \u201cIt\u2019s not magic, it\u2019s ancestral knowledge,\u201d says Ren\u00e9e Dumas, a mambo in Carrefour.<\/p>\n\n\n

In a country where institutions are collapsing, Voodoo has reemerged as a pillar of spiritual strength and communal support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rituals offer hope, identity, and a sense of belonging. \u201cVoodoo has been our resistance since slavery,\u201d says St-Clou. \u201cToday, amid the chaos, we return to it for protection and hope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Haitians face one of the most challenging moments in their history, Voodoo endures, not as superstition, but as a source of strength and survival. \u201cMen anpil, chay pa lou\u201d, \u201cWith many hands, the load is not heavy,\u201d as a Haitian proverb says. EFE<\/p>\n\n\n\n
