Washington, (EFE).- United States President Donald Trump had a tense meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House on Wednesday, during which he played a video alleging a \u201cgenocide\u201d against the white Afrikaner minority in South Africa. Ramaphosa strongly rejected the accusation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Oval Office meeting marked one of the most contentious presidential encounters since Trump\u2019s February meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which ended in a heated exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main focus of the meeting was Trump\u2019s claim that white South African farmers are being persecuted. Despite strict cuts to refugee admissions under his administration, the United States recently granted asylum to several Afrikaner families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump introduced Ramaphosa as a \u201crespected, though sometimes controversial figure,\u201d while Ramaphosa suggested a \u201creset\u201d in bilateral ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clash over refugee claims<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tensions rose when the press questioned the recent arrival of Afrikaner refugees. Trump repeated his belief that white farmers are being persecuted and demanded an explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese are white farmers fleeing South Africa. It\u2019s very sad. We want answers,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ramaphosa firmly denied any \u201cAfrikaner genocide,\u201d urging Trump to engage directly with South Africans to understand the reality on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf there were a genocide, I assure you these people wouldn\u2019t be here, including my own agriculture minister,\u201d he said, pointing to Afrikaners in his delegation.<\/p>\n\n\n

Trump responded by citing \u201cthousands of stories\u201d as evidence and played a five-minute video showing African politicians encouraging violence against whites, along with images of crosses and graves supposedly representing murdered farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to know where that is because I haven\u2019t seen it,\u201d Ramaphosa responded, visibly uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He acknowledged South Africa\u2019s high crime rate but noted most victims are Black, not white. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that while land ownership remains a sensitive issue, South Africa\u2019s Constitution protects property rights while allowing expropriation for public interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey\u2019re being executed, and they\u2019re white, mostly farmers. I don\u2019t know how else to explain it,\u201d Trump insisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one point, Ramaphosa joked, \u201cI don\u2019t have a plane to give you,\u201d referencing a private jet gifted to Trump by Qatar, which the US accepted earlier that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Golf diplomacy and diplomatic fallout<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tensions began to ease when renowned Afrikaner golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, admired by Trump and part of the South African delegation, intervened without endorsing the genocide claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recent arrival of 49 Afrikaner refugees in the US has further strained ties between Washington and Pretoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March, Trump suspended all US aid to South Africa, accusing the country of seizing white-owned farms and adopting an anti-Israel stance at the International Court of Justice, where Pretoria has accused Israel of genocide in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n

South Africa\u2019s new expropriation law, passed earlier this year, allows land seizures without compensation in cases deemed in the public interest, as part of efforts to address apartheid-era inequalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also in March, South Africa\u2019s ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, was expelled and declared persona non grata after publicly criticizing Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citing ongoing \u201cdiscrimination against Afrikaners,\u201d Trump has vowed to boycott any G20 events hosted by South Africa, which is set to hold the G20 leaders\u2019 summit in Johannesburg on November 22\u201323.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
