Lviv, Ukraine, (EFE) \u2013 Russia\u2019s intensified strikes on Ukrainian cities and growing pressure on the frontlines are fueling Ukrainian frustration over the United States\u2019 inaction and Europe\u2019s perceived sluggish response. Many are calling for tougher sanctions on Russia and increased military aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently blamed continued Russian attacks on \u201cthe silence of the US and others,\u201d echoing a widespread belief that Moscow is emboldened by the indecision of Ukraine\u2019s foreign partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo far, the US has only pressured Ukraine, not Russia,\u201d political analyst Vitaliy Portnikov said on Monday via his YouTube channel, which has nearly one million followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portnikov noted that only after Zelenskyy\u2019s latest criticism did United States President Donald Trump respond to the killing of civilians, calling Vladimir Putin \u201ccrazy\u201d, after over 900 drones and 90 missiles struck Ukraine over the past three nights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Ukrainian analysts hope continued Russian attacks on civilians may provoke Trump to support military aid and sanctions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But many have shifted their expectations away from the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking to Europe<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe rhetoric has been encouraging, but we need action,\u201d said Khrystyna Shumska, a mother in Lviv whose husband is fighting near Pokrovsk. \u201cWe feel alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine has long urged Europe to boost military support, invest in joint defense production, and enforce stronger sanctions against Russia\u2019s economy. But progress has been slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEurope is waking up, but it\u2019s still in pajamas, sipping coffee,\u201d said Oleksiy Melnyk, a security analyst at the Razumkov Centre in Kyiv and a former aide to the Minister of Defense. \u201cIt\u2019s moving in the right direction, just far too slowly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Ukraine is now permitted to use Western-supplied long-range weapons against Russian military targets, a move Ukraine has requested since 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts say the measure is welcome but late, and its impact will depend on the number and speed of deliveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnless Europe truly feels threatened by Russia, this inertia may continue,\u201d warned Melnyk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Melnyk stressed that if Russia succeeds in Ukraine, it won\u2019t stop there. Though its army is advancing slowly, Russia is already targeting Europe with cyberattacks, sabotage, and even assassinations of political opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe real danger is the erosion of Euro-Atlantic security,\u201d he said. \u201cGeography won\u2019t protect Europe if its security guarantees are weakened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanctions still ineffective<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the Black Sea Institute of Strategic Studies, recent EU sanctions on nearly 200 Russian oil tankers are unlikely to significantly affect Moscow\u2019s oil exports, which remain steady.<\/p>\n\n\n

The head of its monitoring group, Andrii Klymenko, told EFE that Russian tankers don\u2019t rely on European ports or insurance to reach buyers in India and China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He argued that only banning Russian vessels from using European territorial waters, such as the Baltic Sea or English Channel, would have a real effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEurope knows what it must do to make sanctions effective,\u201d Klymenko said, \u201cbut it\u2019s afraid to take that step.\u201d EFE <\/p>\n\n\n\n
