Brussel, (EFE).- The European Union, the United Kingdom, and Spain have reached a long-awaited agreement on Gibraltar\u2019s post-Brexit status, resolving the final unresolved issue more than five years after the UK\u2019s departure from the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis agreement on Gibraltar is now a reality. A historic agreement,\u201d announced Spanish Foreign Minister Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares on social media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His statement was echoed by EU Commissioner Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, and Gibraltar\u2019s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement eliminates physical barriers and customs checks between Spain and Gibraltar while maintaining the integrity of the Schengen Area, the EU single market, and the customs union, the parties confirmed in a joint statement. <\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cWith this agreement, the fence will disappear, the last wall in continental Europe,\u201d said Albares in a press conference alongside \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Border checks removed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Under the new deal, all border controls between Gibraltar and the Spanish town of La L\u00ednea de la Concepci\u00f3n will be removed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, dual border checks will be carried out at Gibraltar\u2019s airport and port by Gibraltar and Schengen authorities in full cooperation. <\/p>\n\n\n

Spain will oversee the Schengen checks, while Gibraltar will continue its regular internal checks. \u201cThis will bring trust, legal certainty, and prosperity to the entire region,\u201d the joint statement said, promoting close cooperation between Spanish and Gibraltarian authorities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis agreement clearly benefits the people on both sides of the border,\u201d \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d said. \u201cIt improves the legal framework for businesses and strengthens the regional economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Customs and trade rules agreed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In terms of goods movement, customs checks will also be removed, and cooperation between the UK and EU customs authorities will be strengthened. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement includes provisions on indirect taxation, including for tobacco, aimed at avoiding market distortions and ensuring shared economic benefits. <\/p>\n\n\n

The deal safeguards the legal positions of both the UK and Spain regarding sovereignty, affirming that it does not affect the long-standing dispute over Gibraltar\u2019s status. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parties have also committed to fair competition in areas such as state aid, taxation, labor rights, environmental protections, trade and sustainable development, anti-money laundering, and transport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Path to ratification<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d expressed full confidence that the deal will be approved: \u201cI am absolutely convinced this agreement will be ratified because it is a good agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He emphasized the extensive negotiations behind the deal. \u201cWe studied every detail, worked closely with all partners, and found the best possible solution,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Slovak commissioner noted that the removal of Gibraltar\u2019s border fence will boost economic opportunities across the region, particularly in the Campo de Gibraltar, and said the EU will support further investment and development efforts there. <\/p>\n\n\n

The agreement is now expected to pave the way for a formal treaty, subject to ratification by the involved parties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
