Jerusalem\/Tehran\/Washington, June 13 (EFE).- Israel <\/span><\/span>struck more than 100 targets<\/span><\/span> in Iran early Friday, killing top military commanders and nuclear scientists for which Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has vowed \u201csevere punishment.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In a seven-minute address, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel had launched Operation Rising Lion \u201cto roll back the Iranian threat to Israel\u2019s very survival\u201d and which will \u201ccontinue for as many days as it takes to remove this threat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Claiming Iran has produced enough enriched uranium for nine atom bombs, he said Israel had \u201cstruck at the heart of Iran\u2019s nuclear enrichment program. We struck at the heart of Iran\u2019s nuclear weaponization program. We targeted Iran\u2019s main enrichment facility in Natanz. We targeted Iran\u2019s leading nuclear scientists working on the Iranian bomb.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

He added that Israel also struck Iran\u2019s ballistic missile program,\u00a0 calling it an \u201cintolerable threat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

In a mid-morning statement, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said <\/span><\/span>more than 200 <\/span><\/span>of its<\/span><\/span> fighter jets, \u201cguided by precise intelligence,\u201d struck <\/span><\/span>more than<\/span><\/span> 100 targets across Iran, including the hideouts of senior operatives in the Iranian military leadership. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It claimed t<\/span><\/span>he strikes <\/span><\/span>killed<\/span><\/span> \u201cthe three most senior military commanders of the Iranian regime\u201d: Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps <\/span><\/span>(IRGC)<\/span><\/span> Hossein Salami, <\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span> Commander of Khatam al-Anbiya (Emergency Command), Gholam-Ali Rashid.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Defense Minister Israel Katz declared a special state of emergency throughout the country <\/span><\/span>in expectation of retaliation<\/span><\/span> in the \u201cimmediate future.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A <\/span><\/span>ban<\/span><\/span> on educational activities, gatherings, and workplaces, except for essential sectors, <\/span><\/span>is in place <\/span><\/span>and the country\u2019s airspace has been closed until further notice, the IDF reported.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

President Isaac Herzog accused Iran of radicalizing and destabilizing the region \u201cwith its proxies\u201d and hoped Israel\u2019s attacks \u201cwill change the trajectory of our region towards a more peaceful and prosperous future.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Tehran vows punishment <\/b><\/h4>\n\n

In Iran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned of retaliation.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe Zionist regime opened its dirty and bloody hand to a crime in our beloved country this morning and revealed its evil nature by striking residential centers more than ever before. The regime must expect a severe punishment,\u201d he said, according to Tasnim.<\/p>\n\n

He confirmed the deaths of \u201cseveral commanders and scientists,\u201d and said \u201cwith this crime, the Zionist regime prepared a bitter and painful fate for itself and will definitely receive it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

The IRGC confirmed <\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span>he assassination of Salami in an Israeli strike in Tehran, as well as \u201ca number of his bodyguards and colleagues,\u201d it said in a statement carried by IRNA, <\/span><\/span>which also reported the death of Bagheri and Rashid<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

On Thursday, Salami had said the Islamic Republic was prepared for “war at any level” and would respond to any aggression.<\/p>\n

The IRGC<\/span><\/span> said<\/span><\/span> that it was \u201cready to respond decisively and harshly to the aggression of the Zionist enemy.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

State media also reported the deaths of <\/span><\/span>nuclear scientists <\/span><\/span>Mohammad-Mehdi Tehranchi, president of the Islamic Azad University, Fereydoun Abbasi, former head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, <\/span><\/span>as well as four others <\/span><\/span>in separate strikes. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

An unknown number of civilians were also killed in attacks on residential areas in northern Tehran, IRNA said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cResponding to this aggression is Iran’s legal and legitimate right in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, and the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to defend the Iranian nation with all their might and in a manner they determine,\u201d Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said, calling on the United Nations Security Council to \u201cact immediately.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Israeli media reported mid-morning that its armed forces had begun intercepting some of more than 100 drones it said Iran launched in retaliation. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The attack began around 3.30 am local time (12:00 GMT) when loud explosions were heard in the Iranian capital and several other areas of the country, including Natanz, which hosts one of the main uranium enrichment facilities and from where black smoke was seen rising.<\/p>\n\n

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed the Natanz site was among the targets of the attack <\/span><\/span>but<\/span><\/span> \u201cno increase in radiation levels has been observed,\u201d <\/span><\/span>according to <\/span><\/span>Director General Rafael Grossi. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Flights have been suspended at Imam Khomeini Airport, <\/span><\/span>while <\/span><\/span>Iraq <\/span><\/span>and Jordan <\/span><\/span>also closed <\/span><\/span>their<\/span><\/span> airspace<\/span><\/span>s.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Israel’s move ‘unilateral’: US <\/b><\/h4>\n\n

While Netanyahu in his address thanked the United States for its \u201csteadfast stance\u201d and \u201csupport of the country,\u201d US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement that \u201cIsrael took unilateral action against Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWe are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region. Israel advised us that they believe this action was necessary for its self-defense,” he added.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cPresident Trump and the administration have taken all necessary steps to protect our forces and remain in close contact with our regional partners. Let me be clear: Iran should not target US interests or personnel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Trump has not publicly responded to the situation, but is scheduled to hold a national security meeting at 11 am on Friday morning.<\/p>\n\n

On Thursday, he acknowledged that there was a possibility of an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, but said that he didn\u2019t believe it would be “imminent.”<\/p>\n\n

Just over an hour before the attacks, the president had written on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he remained committed to reaching “a diplomatic solution” in the nuclear negotiations with Iran, the sixth round of which is scheduled for Sunday in Muscat, Oman.<\/p>\n

UN <\/span><\/span>Secretary-General <\/span><\/span>Antonio Guterres condemned any military escalation in the Middle East and is \u201cparticularly concerned by Israeli attacks on nuclear installations in Iran while talks between Iran and the United States on the status of Iran’s nuclear program are underway,\u201d his spokesman Farhan Haq said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

New York City authorities announced that they have reinforced security at various locations in the city linked to Israeli and Jewish communities.<\/p>\n\n

The strikes on Iran come after US media outlets reported in recent days that Israel was preparing to launch an attack against the country. EFE<\/p>\n\n
