{"id":1955547,"date":"2025-06-17T21:59:36","date_gmt":"2025-06-17T19:59:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/?p=1955547"},"modified":"2025-06-17T23:52:50","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T21:52:50","slug":"uk-parliament-decriminalize-abortion-england-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/en\/latest-news\/2025-06-17\/uk-parliament-decriminalize-abortion-england-wales\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Parliament backs landmark vote to decriminalize abortion in England and Wales"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">London, (EFE).- The United Kingdom Parliament voted on Tuesday in favor of an amendment to decriminalize abortion in England and Wales at any stage of pregnancy, eliminating the risk of prison for women who terminate pregnancies outside current legal limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amendment passed in the House of Commons by 379 votes to 137 and will now proceed to the House of Lords for final approval. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was presented as part of the Criminal Justice Bill by Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi and described by many as a \u201chistoric step\u201d for women\u2019s rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the current 1967 Abortion Act, abortion is permitted up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the underlying 1861 Offences Against the Person Act still criminalizes abortion outside those parameters, with penalties of up to life imprisonment unless the woman\u2019s life is at risk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis law is from the Victorian era, passed by an all-male Parliament. It\u2019s outdated and being used more and more against vulnerable women,\u201d Antoniazzi told MPs. \u201cThese women need care and support, not criminalization.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-women-s-rights-advocates-hail-reform\"><strong>Women\u2019s Rights advocates hail reform<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The so-called \u201cAntoniazzi Clause\u201d seeks to ensure that women are not investigated, arrested, or prosecuted for having abortions beyond the legal time limit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crucially, it does not alter the current provisions on how abortion services are delivered, including the time limit, medical requirements, or the need for approval from two doctors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to official statistics, over 250,000 abortions were carried out in England and Wales in 2022. Nearly 99% occurred before 20 weeks of pregnancy, Antoniazzi said, arguing that the remaining 1% of women often found themselves \u201cin desperate circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also criticized the three known cases between 1861 and 2022 in which women were arrested for illegal <a href=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/en\/latest-news\/2024-03-05\/france-makes-history-by-enshrining-abortion-as-a-constitutional-right\/\">abortions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a farce that women still face legal threats based on a 19th-century law,\u201d she said during the Commons debate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amendment received cross-party support and was treated as a conscience issue, meaning MPs were free to vote according to their personal beliefs, rather than party lines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-critics-warn-of-health-risks\"><strong>Critics warn of health risks<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite strong backing from many MPs, the amendment faced opposition from several Conservative lawmakers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch, along with MP Caroline Johnson, voiced concerns about potential risks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe later an abortion occurs, the more medical complications may arise,\u201d Johnson warned. \u201cWe must ensure we protect women\u2019s health as well as unborn children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) labeled the amendment \u201cextreme and dangerous,\u201d claiming it would \u201ceffectively decriminalize all abortions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, rights advocates insist that legal reforms are necessary to protect women from unjust prosecution. \u201cThis vote is a turning point for reproductive rights in the UK,\u201d said a spokesperson for the British Pregnancy Advisory Service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill now moves to the House of Lords, where it will face further scrutiny before potentially becoming law.
