International Desk, (EFE).- United States President Donald Trump criticized Spain\u2019s financial contributions to NATO on Friday, claiming the country has \u201calways paid very little\u201d and reaffirmed his proposal for all members, except the United States, to spend 5% of their GDP on defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to reporters upon arriving in New Jersey, Trump said Spain \u201cshould pay the same as everyone else\u201d and called out Canada as another country that, from his point of view, benefits from US protection without paying its fair share. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSpain has always paid very little. NATO will have to deal with that,\u201d said Trump. \u201cEither Spain has been a good negotiator or they haven\u2019t done the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump added: \u201cYou know who else has paid very little? A place called Canada. They said, \u2018Why should we pay when the US can protect us for free?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president\u2019s comments come just days before the NATO Summit in the Hague, scheduled for June 24-26, where Trump is expected to push for a major increase in defense spending by alliance members. <\/p>\n\n\n

White House backs 5% proposal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also defended the 5% target. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe president wants every European country to pay their fair share and reach that 5% threshold,\u201d Leavitt told reporters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s only fair, considering American taxpayers have already contributed billions to our mutual defense,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leavitt stressed that while she had not seen Spain\u2019s latest position, Trump\u2019s priorities for NATO allies, Spain included, were clear. <\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cHe will speak about this directly, but he has always emphasized the importance of a strong and balanced alliance,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump believes the current 2% target is \u201cridiculous,\u201d arguing that most members are financially capable of contributing more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve supported NATO for a long time, sometimes paying nearly 100% of the cost. I don\u2019t think we should keep doing that,\u201d he said Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spain pushes back: 5% is \u2018irrational\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez has officially rejected the idea of increasing Spain\u2019s defense spending to 5%, calling it \u201cirrational and counterproductive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a letter to NATO <\/a>Secretary General Mark Rutte, S\u00e1nchez proposed a more flexible approach in the summit declaration, suggesting that the 5% goal be optional or that Spain be excluded altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor Spain, reaching 5% would be incompatible with our welfare system and our vision of the world,\u201d S\u00e1nchez wrote. He warned that such a commitment would mean raising taxes on the middle class or cutting public services and social programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While acknowledging the security threat posed by Russia, S\u00e1nchez emphasized that Spain already plans to reach the 2% mark this year and has one of the highest annual increases in defense spending among NATO countries.<\/p>\n\n\n

He also noted that Spain plays a vital role in NATO operations, contributing key military command centers and hosting American AEGIS destroyers at the Rota Naval Base, assets critical for NATO\u2019s missile defense system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSpain will continue fulfilling its duties and contributing to European security,\u201d S\u00e1nchez stated. \u201cBut we cannot agree to a fixed GDP-based spending goal at this summit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
