International Desk (EFE).- United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres accused the international community, on Friday, of failing Gaza as famine and despair grew under Israel\u2019s military offensive, echoing calls from Germany, France, Mexico, and others for an urgent ceasefire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement addressed to Amnesty International\u2019s annual assembly and shared by the UN, Guterres said he is unable to comprehend \u201cthe level of indifference and inaction we are seeing from too many in the international community,\u201d as Gaza descends into devastation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis goes beyond anything we have seen in modern times,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guterres painted a grim picture of despair, citing children who say they would rather \u201cgo to heaven, where at least they\u2019ll have food,\u201d and humanitarian workers so overwhelmed they feel \u201cneither alive nor dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is not just a humanitarian crisis. It is a moral crisis that challenges the global conscience,\u201d Guterres warned, adding that although \u201cwords do not feed hungry children,\u201d he would continue to speak out at every opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guterres has consistently criticized Israel\u2019s conduct in Gaza, leading to a diplomatic freeze between his office and the Israeli government, which accuses the UN of bias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International calls for ceasefire grow louder<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Guterres\u2019s remarks came as diplomatic pressure mounted on Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germany, France, and the United Kingdom jointly urged an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, calling on Israel to end what they described as a \u201chumanitarian catastrophe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is time to stop the war,\u201d the three nations said in a joint statement, backing efforts led by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt to broker peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The E3 countries demanded the release of hostages held by Hamas and insisted the group must be disarmed and excluded from any future governance in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also criticized Israel\u2019s blockade of humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPreventing the delivery of life-saving aid to civilians is unacceptable,\u201d the statement read. \u201cWe call on the Israeli government to immediately lift restrictions and allow the UN and humanitarian organizations to prevent further famine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latin American countries raise their voices<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mexico\u2019s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, also condemned the famine in Gaza on Friday and called for a \u201cconstruction of peace\u201d between Israel and Palestine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMexico condemns what is happening and supports peace between the two states,\u201d she said, reaffirming her position in global forums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Brazil, the government welcomed France\u2019s decision to recognize the State of Palestine in September and encouraged other countries to follow suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brazil also reiterated its support for Palestine\u2019s full UN membership and its commitment to the two-state solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brazilian President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva previously denounced Israel\u2019s military response in Gaza as \u201cgenocide,\u201d drawing parallels with the Holocaust, a statement that led to diplomatic tensions with Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chile and Uruguay have also joined in criticizing the humanitarian blockade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chilean President Gabriel Boric referred to the situation as a \u201cPalestinian genocide,\u201d while Uruguay called on Israel to allow immediate humanitarian access via the UN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump downplays France\u2019s recognition of Palestine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump dismissed France\u2019s plan to recognize Palestine, stating, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter. It\u2019s not going to change anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to reporters before departing for Scotland, Trump downplayed French President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s announcement, calling it \u201cirrelevant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Current US policy remains aligned with Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the French decision as \u201ca propaganda win for Hamas\u201d and \u201ca slap in the face to the victims of Oct. 7.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
