sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who recently ordered precautionary measures against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023), including an ankle monitor, a social media ban, and a nighttime curfew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US Treasury Department said the sanctions fall under the Global Magnitsky Act, a law that authorizes the US government to penalize foreign nationals involved in corruption or human rights violations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a targeted measure in response to politically motivated judicial actions,\u201d said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDe Moraes is responsible for a repressive campaign of censorship, arbitrary detentions, and politicized prosecutions, including the case against former President Jair Bolsonaro,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sanctions freeze any assets De class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move escalates a broader campaign led by the administration of Donald Trump, a close ally of Bolsonaro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Jul. 18, the US revoked De Moraes\u2019s visa, barring him from entering the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recent sanctions add a financial dimension to that pressure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump, who has labeled <a href=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/en\/latest-news\/2025-07-29\/bolsonaro-leads-motorcyclist-rally-in-brasilia\/\">Bolsonaro<\/a>\u2019s prosecution a \u201cwitch hunt,\u201d also announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, citing concerns over political repression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will continue to hold accountable those who threaten American interests and the freedoms of our citizens,\u201d Bessent added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bolsonaro is accused of leading a failed coup plot alongside former ministers and senior military officials after losing the 2022 presidential election to Brazilian President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva. <\/p>\n\n\n<div widened the rift between Washington and Bras\u00edlia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Brazilian government has yet to issue an official response, Lula\u2019s team has hinted at
