Beirut, Aug 3 (EFE).- On Aug. 4, 2020, a routine call to Beirut\u2019s Karantina fire station ended in tragedy when ten firefighters dispatched to the city\u2019s port perished in what would become the largest non-nuclear explosion in history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen they arrived, the chief saw a large warehouse on fire, thick smoke rising, but the doors were all shut,\u201d recalled Captain Ali Najem, head of communications at the firehouse, speaking to EFE. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey had no idea hundreds of tons of ammonium nitrate had been improperly stored inside for years,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n

The crew began extinguishing the fire, unaware of the danger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One firefighter called for reinforcements, and as backup prepared to leave, the explosion ripped through the port. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf the others had still been in their dorms, they likely would\u2019ve died too. The blast destroyed walls and threw furniture,\u201d Najem added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The blast killed more than 200 people, injured 6,500, and devastated entire neighborhoods in Beirut. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the victims was three-year-old Alexandra Naggear, who died from a brain injury just blocks from the port. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families mourn and demand accountability<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cEverything material was lost, but that doesn\u2019t matter. What matters is our daughter was murdered by a corrupt state that allowed tons of explosives to sit near our home,\u201d her father, Paul Naggear, told EFE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ammonium nitrate, reportedly bound for Mozambique, had remained in the port for six years due to technical and legal issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multiple Lebanese officials had been warned of its presence for a long time before the explosion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t just a Lebanese issue. There are actors in several countries involved, companies and individuals who should be held accountable,\u201d said Naggear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He emphasized that true justice must be thorough, even if it takes years. We\u2019re not asking for revenge, but for full responsibility. Nothing less.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Mariana Foudalian, the explosion claimed her sister Gaia, who was about to take a shower before heading out shopping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe died in her home, like so many others, at home, on the road, at work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigation blocked, but pressure grows<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Five years on, Lebanon\u2019s investigation into the blast remains largely paralyzed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to victims\u2019 families and NGOs, it has been delayed by former senior officials avoiding questioning and obstructing the process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lead investigator Judge Tarek Bitar faced direct threats, and high-profile suspects often ignored subpoenas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey felt protected by the state,\u201d said Naggear. It wasn\u2019t until early 2025, after the appointment of a new prosecutor, that the probe restarted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foudalian, now a prominent member of the Victims\u2019 Families Association, said they continue to demand \u201ccomplete justice,\u201d not just for loved ones, but for all Lebanese citizens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
