Bogot\u00e1 (EFE).- Colombia bid farewell on Tuesday to Senator and presidential pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, who died Monday after succumbing to injuries from a June assassination attempt, in a solemn ceremony at Bogot\u00e1\u2019s Plaza de Bol\u00edvar that silenced the usually bustling political square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flags outside Congress flew at half-mast as a steady stream of citizens lined up from 8:00 am to enter the National Capitol and pay respects at the coffin, draped with the Colombian flag and guarded by the Presidential Guard Battalion, police, and Bogot\u00e1 city officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visitors entered in groups of 15, leaving flowers, crossing themselves, or quietly reciting prayers before exiting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHis absence is a painful blow for those of us who were his friends and shared legislative work with him. His departure leaves a void in a country that needs democrats like him,\u201d said Attorney General Gregorio Eljach.<\/p>\n\n\n

From assassination attempt to national farewell<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Uribe Turbay, 39, was shot on Jun. 7 while speaking with supporters in Bogot\u00e1\u2019s Modelia neighborhood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two bullets to the head and one to the left leg left him in critical condition for 64 days at Fundaci\u00f3n Santa Fe hospital, where he died early Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attack, now under investigation by the Attorney General\u2019s Office, led to six arrests and prompted widespread condemnation both in Colombia and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n

A rising figure in the right-wing opposition party Centro Democr\u00e1tico, led by former Colombian President \u00c1lvaro Uribe, to whom he was not related, Uribe Turbay\u2019s career was widely seen as on track toward a 2026 presidential bid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His coffin arrived at the Capitol on Monday to a military march, white handkerchief salutes, and a minute of silence. It will remain there until Wednesday noon before moving to Bogot\u00e1\u2019s Primatial Cathedral for funeral services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions erupt amid mourning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The day\u2019s solemnity was briefly disrupted when chants against President Gustavo Petro broke out in the queue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the cries of \u201cOut with Petro!\u201d grew louder, supporters of Petro\u2019s Pacto Hist\u00f3rico party responded with shouts against former President Uribe and the slain senator, sparking verbal confrontations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut they\u2019ve already killed him, leave us in peace,\u201d some mourners replied. The standoff cooled when the crowd began chanting \u201cUribe, Uribe, Uribe!\u201d and continued toward the Capitol entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n

Mar\u00eda Victoria Cebri\u00e1n, a Bogot\u00e1 resident, told EFE she came \u201cto mourn a man who did not deserve what happened to him\u201d and would have voted for him in 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another mourner, Luis Alfonso Castellanos, 38, said, \u201cUribe deserved to be here in Congress\u201d and \u201cwould have had a place in the Casa de Nari\u00f1o\u201d, Colombia\u2019s presidential palace, had he not been killed. EFE <\/p>\n\n\n\n
