{"id":2096367,"date":"2025-08-23T20:46:30","date_gmt":"2025-08-23T18:46:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/?p=2096367"},"modified":"2025-08-24T00:47:46","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T22:47:46","slug":"kilmar-abrego-garcia-us-pressured-deportation-uganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/en\/latest-news\/2025-08-23\/kilmar-abrego-garcia-us-pressured-deportation-uganda\/","title":{"rendered":"Kilmar \u00c1brego Garc\u00eda claims US pressured him with deportation threat to Uganda"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New York, US (EFE).- Kilmar \u00c1brego Garc\u00eda, a Salvadoran who spent nearly three months in prison in El Salvador after being mistakenly sent there and later returned to the United States, alleges that the Trump administration used the threat of deportation to Uganda to force him into a guilty plea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c1brego\u2019s attorneys stated in a court filing on Saturday that the US Department of Justice pressured him to plead guilty to two felony charges by offering deportation to Costa Rica once he served any criminal sentence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlong with that proposal, the government presented a letter to Mr. \u00c1brego\u2019s lawyer confirming that he could live freely in that country, that Costa Rica would accept him as a refugee or grant him residency, and that he would not be returned to El Salvador,\u201d his lawyers said in the filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, when \u00c1brego resisted the deal, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials reportedly told his attorneys that authorities had decided instead to deport him to Uganda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-coercive-tactics-alleged\"><strong>\u201cCoercive tactics\u201d alleged<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is only one interpretation of these facts: the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and ICE are using their collective powers to force Mr. Abrego to choose between a guilty plea followed by relative safety, or his transfer to Uganda, where his security and freedom would be threatened,\u201d Abrego\u2019s lawyer Sean Hecker wrote in the court document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, Abrego was released from a Tennessee jail while awaiting trial on federal charges of human smuggling and a parallel deportation proceeding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was initially brought back to the US to face accusations of transporting undocumented migrants inside the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Salvadoran had previously been held for nearly three months in El Salvador, a detention his lawyers described as the result of a US government \u201cerror\u201d before he was returned to Tennessee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dhs-reaction-and-uganda-deal\"><strong>DHS reaction and Uganda deal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DHS Secretary Kristi Noem reacted to his release by again referring to Abrego as \u201ca monster\u201d and accusing the judge of showing \u201cdisdain\u201d for the safety of US citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, the Ugandan government announced it had reached an agreement with the United States President Donald Trump administration to accept deportees from third countries expelled from the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court is now expected to decide on both Abrego\u2019s federal charges and his immigration case, as his attorneys argue that Washington is leveraging deportation threats to extract a guilty plea.
