{"id":2109416,"date":"2025-08-29T20:21:36","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T18:21:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/?p=2109416"},"modified":"2025-08-30T18:22:05","modified_gmt":"2025-08-30T16:22:05","slug":"uruguayan-als-patient-fights-for-euthanasia-law-everything-is-a-struggle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/en\/other-news\/2025-08-29\/uruguayan-als-patient-fights-for-euthanasia-law-everything-is-a-struggle\/","title":{"rendered":"Uruguayan ALS patient fights for euthanasia law: \u2018Everything is a struggle\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Alejandro Prieto <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Montevideo, Aug 29 (EFE).- For Beatriz Gel\u00f3s, a 71-year-old former teacher living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the fight to legalize euthanasia in Uruguay is about giving herself and others the choice \u201cto continue the ordeal or not\u201d when the time comes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gel\u00f3s, who was diagnosed nearly two decades ago, has seen her physical independence steadily erode. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once a Spanish-language teacher, wife, and mother of two, she now lives in a nursing home and depends on caregivers for nearly all daily tasks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI knew something serious was coming. I didn\u2019t know about this disease, damn it,\u201d she told EFE in an interview. \u201cEverything is a struggle. Now I can barely eat by myself. My hands shake, and food falls to the floor. Even scratching myself is impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-push-for-a-dignified-death-law\"><strong>Push for a dignified death law<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2022, Gel\u00f3s wrote a public letter demanding a clear and well-drafted euthanasia law, expressing the pain of no longer being able to hold her grandchildren to sleep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her testimony, along with that of other patients, has become central to Uruguay\u2019s ongoing parliamentary debate on the so-called \u201cdignified death\u201d bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a recent vote in the lower house, her name was cited alongside those of Fernando Sureda, Pablo Salgueiro, and Pablo C\u00e1nepa, patients who requested euthanasia but died before the bill advanced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI liked it when Deputy Luis Gallo quoted my words, \u2018life would be more dignified if I could scratch myself,\u2019 with indignation. I wanted to be there, watching from the gallery,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although her family does not support her push for euthanasia, Gel\u00f3s insists it is not just about her. \u201cI fight for me, but for many more who are desperate,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She believes the Senate will approve the legislation, which would place Uruguay among Latin American countries advancing euthanasia rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colombia already allows it, while courts in Peru and Ecuador have recognized individual cases. \u201cIt would be wonderful if Uruguay could serve as an example, even if we\u2019re not the first,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-daily-pain-and-resilience\"><strong>Daily pain and resilience<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ALS has left Gel\u00f3s with constant pain in her shoulders, hips, knees, and feet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She struggles to sleep and must be repositioned twice a night. Despite this, she finds comfort in her inner life and in memories of her childhood with her five siblings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we moved to Carrasco Norte, our house was half-finished. After dinner, we would turn off the lamp and go out to the sidewalk to sing together. I try to think of that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though she admits she may sound \u201carrogant,\u201d Gel\u00f3s says she does not fear death. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEverything that lives dies. Death is part of life. I don\u2019t believe there\u2019s anything after,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-holding-on-to-life\"><strong>Holding on to life<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While she advocates for the right to choose euthanasia, Gel\u00f3s emphasized that she is not ready yet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor now, I am not willing. I also want to resolve some family matters,\u201d she said, adding that she worries about her husband, who suffers from serious heart problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, she keeps finding reasons to live: attending an online writing workshop, painstakingly typing on her computer, buying small gifts for her grandchildren, and going for walks with a caregiver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have life. Life has this force that lifts you up. One day you\u2019re down, the next you grab onto something and move forward, up to a point,\u201d she reflected.
