Buenos Aires (EFE).- Argentina\u2019s Security Minister Patricia Bullrich was accused on Tuesday of abuse of authority after requesting judicial raids on a news outlet and the homes of two journalists who published leaked audio recordings of Karina Milei, the president\u2019s sister and presidential secretary general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government claims the recordings were made illegally inside the Casa Rosada (Argentine Presidential Palace). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry of Security filed a complaint on Monday asking a judge to authorize the \u201cforensic seizure\u201d of material from the digital outlet \u201cCarnaval\u201d and to raid the homes of journalists Jorge Rial and Mauro Federico. <\/p>\n\n\n

The government denounced what it called \u201ca crude, illegal intelligence operation against one of the administration\u2019s main figures\u201d and demanded that the judiciary prevent further distribution of the recordings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, a judge accepted a government request for an injunction ordering \u201cthe immediate suspension of the dissemination of audios recorded at the Casa de Gobierno of the Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni defended the move, saying the audios were \u201cnot a matter of freedom of expression but a grave violation of institutional privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Milei amplified the message on social media, describing the leaks as an \u201cillegal intelligence operation\u201d aimed at destabilizing the government ahead of Buenos Aires legislative elections this Sunday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opposition and press union condemn raids<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Buenos Aires Press Workers\u2019 Union (SiPreBA) condemned the government\u2019s request for raids, warning that it \u201cviolates the protection of journalistic sources\u201d and could set a dangerous precedent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCase law has consistently rejected this type of measure,\u201d the union said in a statement on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carnaval also denounced the government\u2019s actions as \u201ccensorship,\u201d vowing: \u201cThey will not silence us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn an act of extreme madness, the Milei administration is not only accusing journalism of investigating corruption but also directly attacking freedom of the press and expression,\u201d said journalist Jorge Rial, one of the targets of the proposed raids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corruption scandal deepens<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The leaks come amid a corruption scandal involving alleged kickbacks through Argentina\u2019s National Disability Agency (Andis). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Aug. 20, audio surfaced of a government official describing a scheme of bribe collection connected to pharmaceutical distributor Suizo Argentina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karina Milei has been accused of benefiting from the scheme, allegedly with the knowledge of her brother, President Milei. <\/p>\n\n\n

The latest audios leaked, however, do not mention the corruption case but instead reveal her urging unity within the ruling party, La Libertad Avanza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
