Venice, Italy (EFE).\u2013 The 82nd Venice Film Festival closed Saturday with United States director Jim Jarmusch winning the Golden Lion for \u201cFather Mother Sister Brother,\u201d while Latin American cinema scored big in the Horizons section and a powerful Gaza film claimed the Grand Jury Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jarmusch\u2019s surprise win capped a politically charged awards night at the Lido. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His film, divided into three chapters exploring family ties and starring Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver, Charlotte Rampling, Vicky Krieps, and Tom Waits, beat out the widely tipped favorite \u201cThe Voice of Hind Rajab.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gaza film resonates<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania\u2019s \u201cThe Voice of Hind Rajab\u201d received the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It reconstructs the killing of a six-year-old Palestinian girl, Hind Rajab, during an Israeli attack in January 2024, using the real audio of her emergency calls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCinema cannot restore what has been taken, but it can preserve her voice and make it resonate across borders,\u201d Ben Hania said, “dedicating the award \u201cto the Palestinians and to all those risking everything to save lives in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

The production was backed by Hollywood names including Brad Pitt, Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, and Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phoenix and Mara attended the premiere dressed in mourning and holding a photo of Hind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latin America in the spotlight<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mexican director David Pablos won the Horizons Award for Best Film with \u201cEn el camino,\u201d a raw love story between a young sex worker and a truck driver on Mexico\u2019s northern highways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film had already earned Venice\u2019s Queer Lion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis film comes from a very personal place, and it\u2019s beautiful to see it connect with others,\u201d Pablos said. Producer Inna Payan ended her speech with: \u201cLong live cinema, long live Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Ecuadorian director Ana Cristina Barrag\u00e1n took Horizons Best Screenplay for Hiedra, a co-production with Mexico, France and Spain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film follows Azucena, a woman in her thirties who becomes fixated on an orphan boy in Quito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis prize gives value to our film and means so much for Ecuadorian cinema, where making movies is only possible through titanic collective efforts,\u201d Barrag\u00e1n said, also calling out: \u201cLong live Latin American cinema, free Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Silver Lion for Best Director went to US filmmaker Benny Safdie for \u201cThe Smashing Machine,\u201d starring Dwayne \u201cThe Rock\u201d Johnson. The Volpi Cups for acting were awarded to Italy\u2019s Tony Servillo (La Grazia) and China\u2019s Xin Zhilei (The Sun Rises on Us All).<\/p>\n\n\n

French filmmakers Val\u00e9rie Donzelli and Gilles Marchand won Best Screenplay for \u00c0 pied d\u2019oeuvre, while the Special Jury Prize went to Gianfranco Rosi\u2019s documentary Sotto le nuvole about life around Mount Vesuvius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audience prize for Calle M\u00e1laga<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the new Spotlight section, the audience award went to Calle M\u00e1laga, directed by Spanish-Moroccan filmmaker Maryam Touzani and starring Carmen Maura and Marta Etura. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film, also selected by Morocco for the Oscars, portrays a fraught mother-daughter relationship in Tangier.<\/p>\n\n\n

Accepting the award, Touzani linked her remarks to the war in Gaza: \u201cAs mothers, some of us are lucky to still look into our children\u2019s eyes. Many others cannot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final day of the festival was also marked by politics, with some 5,000 people joining demonstrations on the Lido organized by Italian film associations to denounce what they called a \u201cgenocide\u201d in Gaza. EFE <\/p>\n\n\n\n
