Mexico City (EFE).- One year after an internal power struggle erupted inside the Sinaloa Cartel, the homonymous Mexican has suffered 1,828 homicides and 2,390 disappearances, according to figures from the State Public Security Council (CESP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wave of violence has left residents of Culiac\u00e1n, the state capital, living in fear and demanding peace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, thousands of people marched through Culiac\u00e1n under the slogan \u201c\u00a1Ya basta! Queremos paz\u201d (\u201cEnough! We want peace\u201d), criticizing state governor Rub\u00e9n Rocha Moya for failing to contain the violence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have lived a year where it feels like it has been raining every single day,\u201d said Miguel Calder\u00f3n Quevedo, CESP coordinator, in an interview with EFE. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pointed to October and November 2024, and June 2025, when monthly murders surpassed 170, as the most violent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conflict intensified after the July arrest of Ismael \u201cEl Mayo\u201d Zambada, co-founder of the cartel, who was handed over to US authorities by Joaqu\u00edn Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez, son of Joaqu\u00edn \u201cEl Chapo\u201d Guzm\u00e1n. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rift has pitted \u201cLos Chapitos,\u201d loyal to Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez, against \u201cLos Mayos,\u201d Zambada\u2019s followers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, the United States designated the cartel as a terrorist organization, further underscoring the group\u2019s global impact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families search for the disappeared<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Disappearances have multiplied, with nearly 2,400 cases reported in the past year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calder\u00f3n said the actual figure may be double, as many families avoid reporting cases to authorities they do not trust. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, dozens of mothers\u2019 collectives have emerged across Sinaloa, searching for missing relatives in clandestine graves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe assume the government\u2019s capacity has been exceeded,\u201d Calder\u00f3n explained. \u201cFamilies often turn to faith in organized crime itself, hoping their relatives will be returned safely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Institutions under strain<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sinaloa has experienced similar crises before, in 2008 and 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis time, daily life has been disrupted. Nightlife has disappeared, schools and workplaces have been forced to close, and people live in constant uncertainty,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The security expert argued that solving the crisis will require a greater budget for state-level institutions such as local police, prosecutors, and forensic teams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have very weak state institutions. Without the presence of federal forces, the crisis would be two or three times worse,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday acknowledged the severity of the situation but reaffirmed her government\u2019s commitment to restoring order. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will continue working. The security cabinet meets every 15 days, the Army, National Guard, Navy, and investigative units are present, and there have been many arrests. We will gradually pacify Sinaloa,\u201d she said. EFE <\/p>\n\n\n\n
