Liverpool, UK (EFE).- British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday appealed for \u201cspace\u201d to govern and reset the Labour Party\u2019s direction as it trails in the polls, opening the party\u2019s annual conference in Liverpool with doubts over his leadership looming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starmer is expected to deliver a keynote address on Tuesday aimed at convincing both his party and voters that he can turn around Labour\u2019s fortunes after just over a year in power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seeking to set electoral battle lines, Starmer toughened his rhetoric against right-wing populist party Reform UK, which currently leads national polls. He described it as \u201cthe enemy\u201d in \u201cthe fight of our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He condemned Reform\u2019s proposal to force residents with indefinite leave to remain to reapply under stricter rules. \u201cI think it is a racist policy. I think it is immoral,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starmer urged Labour members to stop \u201cnavel-gazing\u201d and instead focus on communicating the government\u2019s achievements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will be judged in the next election, scheduled for 2029, on whether we have improved living standards, public services, and the country\u2019s security. That is fair, but I must be allowed to work to deliver it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poll slump and rising criticism<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An Ipsos poll conducted Sep. 11-17 showed Reform UK at 34% support, Labour at 22% and the Conservatives at 14%. Starmer\u2019s personal ratings have also fallen to record lows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister acknowledged voter frustration at the slow pace of reform since his election victory in Jul. 2024, stressing his government had \u201cinherited a broken economy and shattered public services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Starmer<\/a>, often criticized for a cautious style, faces pressure from the party\u2019s grassroots to show clear leadership and deliver tangible results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His cuts to social benefits have angered Labour\u2019s base, while promises to revive the economy remain unfulfilled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent weeks have brought forced resignations, including that of his deputy, Angela Rayner, over a tax scandal that triggered an internal election, and Britain\u2019s ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, over past links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Militants demand clearer leadership<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At Liverpool\u2019s ACC conference center, some members voiced disappointment in a leader they say struggles to connect with ordinary voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHis approach has been too cautious, technocratic, and centralist. If he cannot defend the party\u2019s values, we will need someone else to lead us into the next general election,\u201d said former Labour councillor Ken Ritchie, 68.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Union leader Chris Webb, spokesperson for the Communication Workers Union (CWU), argued Starmer \u201chas prioritized big business over ordinary people,\u201d citing \u201cstrategic mistakes\u201d such as cuts to subsidies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf he doesn\u2019t change soon, someone will have to replace him,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delegates also demanded a \u201cclear roadmap,\u201d pointing to next May\u2019s local and regional elections as a critical test of his leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, Finance Minister Rachel Reeves, whose performance is also under scrutiny. will address the conference before Starmer\u2019s speech on Tuesday. EFE <\/p>\n\n\n\n
