Known as the \u201cCholita Tattoo Artist,\u201d she blends the traditional style of her Aymara and Quechua ancestors with rock and goth influences, while using her art to celebrate Indigenous women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to show our culture, the cholita from La Paz, abroad and even here in our city,\u201d the 25-year-old told EFE. \u201cIt is a way of reclaiming what was once rejected in urban spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born Daniela Mendieta in La Paz, she adopted the name \u201cArtemisa\u201d in reference to the Greek Goddess, which she says reflects her artistic vision. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-19-1024x683.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2194489\" style=\"width:887px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-19-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-19-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-19-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-19-1536x1024.webp 1536w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-19-430x286.webp 430w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-19-1200x800.webp 1200w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-19.webp 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>At tattoo conventions, she presents herself as the \u201cCholita Tatuadora,\u201d wearing pollera skirts (a traditional, voluminous, and colorful skirt worn in several Latin American countries, particularly in the Andean regions of Peru and Bolivia and in Panama) like her great-grandmothers, whose traditions had been abandoned by later generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tattooing-identity-and-culture\"><strong>Tattooing identity and culture<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Artemisa said her fascination with tattoos and body modification began in childhood, inspired by Mexican artist Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Cristerna, known as the \u201cVampire Woman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt first, I just wanted to cover myself in tattoos. Becoming a tattoo artist felt like too big a dream, but eventually it became possible,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has now been in the profession for four years, three under the guidance of mentors and one as an independent artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her decision initially caused friction at home. \u201cThere was a little conflict with my family, but over the years they\u2019ve seen me growing on my own, and now they support me more,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working at \u201cHamuy\u201d (meaning \u201ccome\u201d in Quechua), a tattoo studio in La Paz&#8217;s San Pedro neighborhood, Artemisa fuses styles. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" cholita style, shorter skirts, corsets, boots, and a side shawl,\u201d she explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has chosen not to wear the traditional bowler hat yet, saying it remains a mark of honor in some provinces: \u201cOnce I win an award or work abroad, that\u2019s when I\u2019ll use it to complete my outfit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-inked-homage-to-the-andes\"><strong>Inked homage to the Andes <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Her body is a canvas of symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On her left arm, she wears a smiling cholita framed by laurel leaves, a tattoo of Pachamama (Mother Earth), a llama, and an Andean cross, or \u201cchakana.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her right arm is adorned with hyenas in black ink, while her leg features Andean traditions: portraits of Aymara women (a member of an Indigenous people mainly inhabiting the high plateau region of Bolivia and Peru), cholitas drawn like rag dolls or Russian matryoshkas, and larger figures carrying La Paz landscapes in their shawls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, her public debut as the \u201cCholita Tattoo Artist\u201d drew both praise and backlash. <\/p>\n\n\n<div her of disrespect and threatened legal action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artemisa kept working and, a year later, returned with renewed focus on pollera attire and tattoo styles, combining American traditional and Asian elements with Bolivian motifs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has also witnessed shifting attitudes toward tattoo culture. \u201cBefore it was taboo, but now even two women in polleras came to me for tattoos,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite criticism, Artemisa sees herself as part of a growing movement of cultural reinvention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe goal is to have my own studio and for my designs to be recognized inside and outside Bolivia,\u201d she said. \u201cIt would be very beautiful to become an inspiration for other girls who wear the pollera.\u201d EFE
