Against the run of play, the visitors opened the scoring in the 17th minute after Diogo Jota broke through City\u2019s high defensive line, with Mohamed Salah eventually finishing past Ederson.<\/p>\n\n\n

City, who had started the brighter, were soon level through Julian Alvarez who was given a rare start in the absence of the injured Erling Haaland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Argentine played a key role as the home side went in front moments after half-time, as he set Riyad Mahrez free down the right flank and his precise cross left Kevin de Bruyne with an easy tap-in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liverpool were reeling, and the Merseysiders found themselves two goals down minutes later when Ilkay Gundogan scored after Alvarez had seen his shot blocked by Trent Alexander-Arnold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The game was effectively settled at that point, but City continued to pour forward as Liverpool were unable to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n
